If you’re planning on having your wedding day in Melton Mowbray then here’s a few facts and some general information that might be useful…The name Melton comes from the early English word Medeltone- meaning ‘Middletown surrounded by small hamlets,’ Interestingly, the phrase ‘painting the town red” originated in Melton Mowbray when some young aristocrats up for the hunt went on a drunken spree in the 1800s and literally painted Melton town centre red.
Melton Mowbray is now referred to as the ‘Rural Capital of Food, ‘as the town is well known for its world famous pork pies and Stilton cheese. The Melton Mowbray Pork Pie has a long heritage in British food history! The local pork pie was ‘discovered’ by a visiting hunter who saw their grooms and servants eating it in the late 1780’s. It was originally produced as a means of preserving the meat. At the time, the region’s stilton cheese production also blossomed giving Melton Mowbray Another food product to be famous for.
When thinking of Melton Mowbray often fox hunting comes to mind and this has been the case for more than two centuries! Melton has become the centre for fox hunters mainly due to several famous packs of foxhounds which had been formed within the area, namely the Belvoir, the Cottesmore and the Quorn.
Street Markets are a significant part of Melton Mowbray’s town culture, they are held at least three times a week in the centre of Melton Mowbray; Tuesdays hold both a street and cattle market, Saturdays hold a large market too and Wednesdays provide a small antique or bric-a-
brac market within the centre of the town. The market is considered the third oldest market in England. Tuesday has been market day since royal approval was given in 1324.
Melton Mowbray even has a cinema! Quite a rarity in such a small town. Up until recently, the film used to stop half way through so you could buy more snacks! How cool is that!?
