Leicester was once known as an important Roman settlement – evidence of this can be found at the Jewry Wall Museum in the city proving that this popular town holds such a long history. In fact, Leicester is one of the oldest cities in England, with a past of at least 2000 years! Originally founded in 50ad Ratae Corieltauvorum (as it was known then) was a Military settlement built on the Fosse way – an extremely direct route stretching from Lincoln to Somerset which is never more than 6 miles from a straight line!
With a multi cultural population of over 325,000, Leicester continues to grow. With redevelopment of the city a continual project and new houses built by the hundreds, Leicester is only getting bigger. Not surprising to hear then that it has the largest economy in the East Midlands.
It is great to know that one of Leicester’s oldest buildings is licenced for weddings. The Guidehall in Leicester is one of the finest surviving timber framed medieval halls in England and has been one of the city’s greatest and most popular venues for more than 600 years. Dating back to the 1390’s this guidehall holds much of its traditional architecture with beautiful original features and detailing. It is truly stunning and can accommodate up to 80 guests.
